Security (Personal, Travel) // BLUF: Six French aid workers, their guide and their driver were killed by gunmen at a giraffe reserve near the capital city of Niamey, Niger on Sunday.
French humanitarian aid group ACTED had stated that their members were involved in the attack.
The aid workers and assistants were " ... were intercepted and killed,” according to the regional governor, while a spokesperson for the giraffe reserve had said that the people responsible were a "unit of terrorists".
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, Islamic militant group Boko Haram and Islamic State affiliates operate within parts of Niger, where travel is not advised.
11 August 2020: Lebanon Leaders Warned About Explosives In July
Security, Political // BLUF: Lebanese government officials were reportedly warned that the 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored at Beirut's port posed a security risk and could destroy the capital if it exploded; according to Reuters.
The subsequent explosion on 04 August resulted in 163 people killed, more than 6000 injured; and destroyed approximately 6000 buildings.
The fallout from the incident has resulted in Lebanon's Prime Minister Hassan Diab announcing the resignation of the government, blaming the disaster on endemic corruption.
12 August 2020: Russia Approves Coronavirus Vaccine For Use
Security (Health) // BLUF: Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that a Russian-produced vaccine, named Sputnik-V, has been given regulatory approval, after less than two months of testing on humans.
According to Putin, the vaccine has also been administered to his daughter.
While mass vaccinations are scheduled for October, experts have raised concerns over the speed of the vaccine's production; suggesting researches may have cut corners.
13 August 2020: Russia To Approve Vaccine Access For Medical Personnel In Two Weeks, Rejects Safety Concerns
Security (Health) // BLUF: Russian officials have reportedly approved the new 'Sputnik-V' coronavirus vaccine for use on medical personnel in two weeks' time.
The vaccine was approved by Russia after less than two months testing, drawing global criticism over its safety; which has been shrugged off by Russian officials.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that his daughter had received the vaccine.
Russia plans to produce 5 million doses of the vaccine per month by December-January.
14 August 2020: Israel And The UAE Reach A Peace Deal With The Help Of Trump
Security, Political // BLUF: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Israel have reached a peace deal, brokered by US President Donald Trump.
The historic deal sees Israel's foreign relations warm in the Middle East, with the normalisation of Israeli and Emirati diplomatic relations.
The deal will see the two countries exchange embassies and ambassadors, as well as cooperate across a spectrum of areas, including health care, trade, security and tourism.
15 August 2020: Britons Rush To Get Home From France Amid New Quarantine
Security (Health) // BLUF: British travellers on their summer holiday are scrambling to return home from France by any means necessary, before a 14-day quarantine comes into force.
France was added to the list of countries that require travellers to enter 14-day quarantine on arrival to the United Kingdom, due to the rising cases of COVID-19 there.
The quarantine for people returning from France comes into effect 0300 GMT on Saturday.
